Gig: Palaye Royale (Death or Glory)
It wasn't that long ago that I was stood outside a record shop in Bristol getting ready for an intimate gig with this band, thinking how I would never be able to see them in a large venue again after seeing them up close (4 people from the front counts as that right?). Well, somewhat tempting fate I decided to book tickets for Wembley Arena to see them go for gold, finally playing at the venue they had dreamed of playing at a young age. In truth, while I knew it would be a big change for them (and potentially a big risk), I believed they had the skills / stage presence / following to pull it off (and they did!).
Venue
This was my first time visiting Wembley Arena (as in truth I flip between small 100-capacity venues to the AO Arena in Manchester), and overall it was a good experience. Their VIP leaves a bit to be desired (stating entry to the lounge for 5:30pm when you don't start processing anyone at security until 5:45pm is poor), however the staff were very friendly (including security) and the food/drinks were also good (though ordering to your seat is a VERY costly experience). It also benefits from multiple hotels within walking distance (there is even a Hilton on the opposite side of the street), and driving to it is straightforward.
Seating wise, its as you would expect for a large venue. Standard seats are standard seats (no frills etc), and if you were lucky enough to get into the Amex VIP section they are slightly better (though still leave you numb / with a bruise in my case). The latter does benefit from a great view of the stage though (actually better than the Beautiful North suite in the AO Arena which was surprising).
Warm-up Acts
Three bands warming up the crowd for the main event, and an interesting mix (putting it lightly). While two of the three weren't bands I would actively listen to, I think the biggest negative was that of the audio team looking after the arena audio. The volume was so loud (even with earplugs in) that it was painful (visibly to those I could see close by). My understanding was that all music venues (half-decent ones at least) have continuous monitoring of the volume levels and adjust to ensure nobody leaves with hearing damage, however I'd say the staff took a night off this time (at least until Palaye Royale were on stage whereby everything went back to normal).
Palaye Royale
To the main event... While I was concerned for the first 10 minutes as audio issues (an intermittent wireless microphone) plagued the set, once the band got going there really was no stopping, and the end result was amazing. Seeing them go from small venues (and a record shop), to playing the arena with ease, shows how great this band are (and how they will continue to grow). Hearing them play tracks from their roots (for the record, I am a big fan of Boom Boom Room, both sides) through to their latest album was fantastic, and their stage presence / visuals made it all the better. While their stage set isn't as involved as 50 Cent / Muse / Nickelback (and that will come with time), it was all about the music (and there's nothing wrong with that).
Overall, one of the best gigs I've been to, and one I'm glad I didn't skip. Seeing them make their youthful dream a reality and having so much fun doing it, combined with the music / threatrics (see the pictures below), made it an unforgettable experience. To the band, I wish you nothing but great things in your future and I hope you continue to excel.
